Composers may submit unsolicited orchestral
scores to the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra (SSO) and/or the Saskatoon
Chamber Orchestra (SCO) for programming consideration. There are
no residency or age restrictions. Works may or may not have been
previously performed. There are no restrictions on duration. Recordings
are helpful but not required.
Works submitted will be considered if they
meet the following guidelines.
Instrumentation should not exceed the following:
• for the SSO — 2.2.2.2; 4.2.3.1; timpani; 1 percussion;
piano; strings (10.8.6.6.4)
• for the SCO — 1.1.1.1; 1.1.0.0; 1 percussion; strings
(6.4.3.3.1). Works that fall outside of these guidelines will
be considered at the discretion of the artistic director.
Works involving soloists or electronics will
be considered. For works with electronics MIDI and/or digital
technologies. include a one-page statement describing production
requirements and technical specifications.
Works will be examined initially by the Composer-in-Residence,
with final decisions to be made by the Artistic Director. The
process of decision-making can take several months. Orchestral
programming is chosen one to two years in advance of a performance.
The artistic merit of the submitted work will
be the primary evaluation criteria. Since a poorly notated/presented
score can make it more difficult to evaluate artistic excellence,
it is in the applicant's best interest that the score be clear,
accurate, and the best representation of the composer's work.
Composers who wish to have their submissions
returned should include a self-addressed stamped envelope. Scores
not returned will be placed in the SSO library.

Scores must be accompanied by a cover letter
providing the following information:
• Title of work
• Duration
• Instrumentation
• Any special performance requirements
• Composer’s name, address, telephone number, and
email address
• A résumé and/or other supporting material
may be included.
Should a work be chosen for performance, the composer will be
responsible for providing, either directly or through a publisher/agent,
professional, legible orchestral parts and scores prepared according
to guidelines established by the Major Orchestral Librarians Association.
Parts on 9 x 12” paper are acceptable.
Submissions should be sent to:
