- The Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra
is a registered charitable, non-profit organization whose
mandate is “to foster
and promote classical music to enhance the artistic, intellectual,
and social life of our community.” The charitable
registration number is 11914 RR0001.
- The Saskatoon Symphony was established
in 1931 as a cultural beacon to the people of Central
and Northern Saskatchewan. The
orchestra now takes its place as the senior arts organization
in Saskatoon, and the fifth oldest orchestra in Canada.
- Today the Saskatoon Symphony provides
employment for over sixty professional musicians, an Artistic
Director, and an administrative team of five. Many
of our musicians privately instruct the musicians, composers,
and conductors of tomorrow.
- Like most performing arts organizations
in Canada, approximately one-third of the Saskatoon Symphony ’s
budget comes from ticket sales and other earned revenues,
one-third from grants, and one-third from corporate sponsorships,
private donations, and fundraising initiatives.
- A dedicated team of year-round volunteers is responsible for the increasingly popular Book and Music Sale, a 10-day event each spring. Other annual fundraising events include the Guide to Dining, Music & Theatre Campaign, the Evening in Vienna, Silent Auctions, and new this year THE VWAG DRIVE A JAG raffle!
- With over 95% of the orchestra’s annual budget of
$1.1 million expended within Saskatchewan, supporting the
Saskatoon Symphony contributes directly to our community’s
healthy economy. A major arts organization, such as
the Saskatoon Symphony, has an average economic impact of
three to five times its annual budget in the community.
- The Saskatoon Symphony performs an
average of twenty-four concerts between September and
May each season. Up
to twenty additional performances are held in schools and
at public and private events.
- An average of four concerts annually are
presented in outlying Saskatchewan communities as part of
our Community Concert Series
- New in 2007, the Marcoux Training
and Education Initiative encompasses Master Classes with
Guest Artists, Apprenticeship for Advanced Music Students,
a Post-Secondary Scholarship, Pre-Concert and University
Classroom Lectures, Composition Workshops, “Four
Seasons” Concerts for Kids in rural Saskatchewan communities,
Public Performances for Preschool Children, and a Parent & Infant
Specialized Music Workshop
Mission
The Saskatoon Symphony Society exists to provide a professional
orchestra, which fosters and promotes classical music to enhance
the artistic, intellectual and social life of our community.
Vision
To achieve the Artistic Vision through great art, good people
and good business.
Demographics
- The Saskatoon Symphony has a loyal
audience with over 1000 annual subscribers. For
many of our concerts we can count on a sold-out house.
- The Saskatoon Symphony performs for audiences of approximately
26,000 each season, which includes individuals of all ages
and profiles.
- A recent survey of our audience identified
concert-goers as being predominantly 45 years of age and
older (88%), with some post-secondary education (80%),
earning more than $60,000 annually (54%), and evenly male/female
balanced. Many
donate annually to the orchestra.
- The orchestra’s audience is
drawn largely from the Saskatoon area, although season
ticket holders do travel from other communities including
Prince Albert, North Battleford, La Ronge, Osler, Rosetown,
Kindersley, Rosthern, Alsask, Humboldt, Martensville,
Asquith, Outlook, Watrous, Warman, Lanigan, Hague, Davidson,
and Colonsay.
Marketing
- The Saskatoon Symphony promotes its Concert Series and Fundraising
Events with targeted marketing, utilizing an appropriate
mix of print, television, radio, and electronic advertising.
- Each concert is also promoted through
press releases, posters, email, quality printed programs,
and the season brochure. Unique
posters are produced for each performance for our Master
Series Concerts, Classics for Kids Series Concerts, and Chamber
Orchestra Series Concerts and are placed at various locations
throughout the city.
