Music Scholarships:
This year the Saskatoon Symphony is pleased to announce the recipient of the Dilys and Eric Burt scholarship for 2009 is Stephanie Unverricht, daughter of one of the symphony musicians Brian Unverricht. She was awarded the scholarship to assist with her first year of studies towards a Master of Music in bassoon performance at the New England Conservatory in Boston.
Stephanie graduated from Evan Hardy Collegiate in Saskatoon (2004) and attended the University of Ottawa where she received her Bachelor of Music Degree (summa cum laude) in performance, studying with Chris Millard. In 2007 Stephanie received the J. Morton Scholarship for Winds. Upon graduation she was the principal bassoon player of the Saskatoon Symphony for the 2008-2009 season.
In addition to being a member of the National Youth Orchestra of Canada (2007 and 2008), her other noteworthy musical achievements included participation in the Kanata Symphony, the Ottawa Chamber Orchestra, the University of Saskatchewan Wind Orchestra, Prairie Virtuosi, the Saskatoon Symphony Chamber Players, Saskatoon Summer Players Orchestra for Fiddler on the Roof, and bassoonist for La Boheme. During the 2008-9 season Stephanie also taught guitar and bassoon lessons.
The Dilys and Eric Burt scholarship, administered by the Saskatoon Symphony, was established through the Saskatoon Foundation in 2004 as an endowment. A portion of their estate provides music scholarships to youth in Saskatchewan to assist young Saskatoon musicians with their professional goals. Applicants must be musicians pursuing formal post secondary study at a university or recognized school of music in the study of a symphonic instrument. Preference is given to musicians who have had working experience playing with the Saskatoon Symphony. Congratulations to Stephanie, and previous recipients Heather Wilson and Carissa Klopoushak.
The Saskatoon Symphony is encouraging our friends in the community and our colleagues in the education industry to join us in supporting this exceptional opportunity to strengthen our young people of this community. If you would like to contribute to our scholarship fund, please consider contacting the Saskatoon Foundation (www.saskatooncommunityfoundation.ca.), or the Saskatoon Symphony Orchestra office.
